The more I’ve learned about the Coalition for the Common Good, its purposes and its potential, the more I view it as a very innovative way for institutions of higher ed to survive and thrive in the current academic and economic climate. The great thing about the collaboration of Otterbein University and Antioch University is that we have very similar missions and are both committed to social justice and equitable education.
We’re living in an unsettling time, and I think it’s a challenge for educators and leaders, especially in states where legislation is preventing them from addressing key pedagogical necessities, like social and emotional learning and structural racism.
Despite the obstacles and frustrations, I am heartened by the work throughout the Coalition, where connection and mutual respect are at the forefront. Our programs provide learners, educators, and professionals a safe space to explore the importance of issues like social justice and anti-racism together, as we hold on to our commitment and mission to uphold these vital democratic pillars.
In her commencement speech last year, Dr. Lesley Jackson, Chair of the Doctor of Education program at Antioch University, highlighted the Coalition’s promise and potential. “This partnership has represented a synergy of purpose, celebration, and great things to come.” I couldn’t agree more. Onward together!
